 Agriculture and the provision of renewable energy are inherently intertwined. However, the policy fields of agriculture and renewable energy in the EU, are not yet meeting. EU agricultural policy is predominantly focused on securing the production of food and feed products while largely neglecting its role in providing feedstock for the biobased economy. Cultivation and supply of energy crops is insufficiently incentivised by the CAP on the supply side. Despite acknowledging the important role of agriculture to provide biobased feedstock for chemicals, energy and materials, policy is not providing the right incentives to make this a reality. Read more.

In 2023, 69% of all new registered passenger cars in the Netherlands carried an internal combustion engine, in most cases combined with some form of electric engine (either mild hybrid, full hybrid or plug-in hybrid). At the same time, 68% of the registered cars carried an electric engine. Five years ago, the situation was completely different, with almost complete dominancy of vehicles with a combustion engine. As Figure 1 shows, it seems that from 2024 onwards the share of newly registered vehicles with an electric engine will outnumber the vehicles with an internal combustion engine.
